Chippewa Correctional Facility consists of an East and West side; the East side consists of three Level II housing units with 240 beds each; one Level IV housing unit with 192 beds; a Level I unit with 120 beds; a 96 bed administrative segregation unit and a 22 bed detention unit. The West side of the facility, formerly Straits Correctional Facility, has dormitory style Level II housing. There are eight Level II Housing Units which have 140 beds each. The facility includes an administration building, maintenance department and warehouse. There is a Health Care unit, Food Service unit and a Programs/School building location on both the East and West sides of the facility.

The Ojibway Correctional Facility is in Marenisco Township, Gogebic County, on Ojibway Road, near M-64. Ojibway Correctional Facility was formerly Camp Ojibway prior to expansion. The facility consists of an administration building, a warehouse and store, and buildings for education, meals, training and housing of inmates. The five housing units can accommodate up to 1,180 prisoners.

The Pugsley Correctional Facility is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Traverse City, near the village of Kingsley. The facility proper is located on 23 acres which contains 3 housing buildings containing 48 cubicles, housing up to 384 prisoners per building. The former Camp Building was renovated when the Facility was being constructed and is able to house up to 190 prisoners, for a total capacity of 1342 prisoners. Additional buildings contained on the property include a Chapel, Programs, Gymnasium, Food Service, Health Care/Administration, Human Resources/Training and Maintenance/Warehouse/Store.

The Central Michigan Correctional is comprised of 16 separate housing units contained in eight buildings. The Facility houses 2400 secure Level I prisoners. There are no individual cells. Prisoner housing units consist of 7 to 8-bed open bays, with 140 to 160 prisoners in each of the 16 units. There are separate building for administration, food service, school, maintenance/warehouse, and prisoner services.

St. Louis Correctional Facility in Gratiot County

This facility now houses only Level IV prisoners. The prison is sited on 67 acres of land in the northeast section of St. Louis, in Gratiot County. It consists of separate buildings for administration, food services, education, maintenance, storage and prisoner housing. There are six general population housing units, one is an Adaptive Skills Residential Program (ASRP) Unit that provides specialized programming in a supportive housing environment for prisoners. There is one Segregation Unit that houses up to 96 prisoners.

Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, located in Ionia, is the most recent facility built by the Michigan Department of Corrections. It is a multi-level facility housing Level I, Level II, Level IV and general population prisoners. It also houses protective housing and administrative segregation prisoners. Prisoners serve institutional needs in areas such as food service, the library, recreational aides and maintenance workers.

The Ionia Maximum Facility is comprised of five Level V housing units and two Level II housing units. Two of the Level V housing units are designated Administrative Segregation, which includes Detention, Temporary Segregation and Secure Status Out-Patient Treatment cells, the remaining three are general population units. The Level V housing consist of five bi-level, double winged single cell units, consisting of day room area, showers, laundry room, staff offices and a fence-in activity and recreational yard for the security Level V prisoners. The Units designated Administrative Segregation affords prisoner outdoor recreation in single occupancy security exercise modules.

The Michigan Reformatory is a multi-level Correctional Facility it houses prisoners classified to Level II (352 beds) and Level IV (797 beds). The prison is on 40 acres of land 15.8 acres inside the walls. The facilities location is west of the city of Ionia in the county of Ionia. Prisoner serve institutional needs in areas such as food service, yard crews, recreation, institutional housekeeping and maintenance workers.

The Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility was named after the prison's first warden. The philosophy of MTU is that a prisoner who has completed the GED and learned a marketable skill has a much better chance of becoming a contributing member of society. The facility houses general population prisoners, along with other prisoners who have been placed in the Social Skills Developmental Unit (SSDU) and the Residential Treatment Program (RTP). The SSDU serves prisoners who are lacking skills necessary to live normal productive lives: some are considered developmentally disabled, many with long histories of institutionalization. The RTP is an integral component of the mental health continuum of care, which includes outpatient mental health teams, crisis stabilization programs, and inpatient hospital units.

The Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center (RGC) serves as a quarantine facility responsible for intake processing of all male offenders who are adjudicated adults sentenced to a term of incarceration with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Prisoners with new commitments, parole violators, and youthful offenders are received at RGC for assessments, screening and classification prior to their placement in general population prisons throughout the agency. RGC sits on 53 acres and also houses the 152-bed Duane L. Waters Health Center. RGC, along with the Parnall Correctional Facility, was carved out of the old State Prison of Southern Michigan (SPSM).

The prison has six housing pods, currently used for MDOC prisoners. An infirmary provides medical services for all prisoners being housed. A food serving area is located within the housing complex and the kitchen is located outside the secure perimeter. The majority of prisoners have serious mental illness and cannot function adequately in a general prison population. They receive evaluations and treatment services from the Corrections Mental Health Program (CMHP) and are classified into acute care, rehabilitation treatment services, or crisis stabilization services.

The Newberry Correctional Facility is in Pentland Township, Luce County, on M-123 and was formerly part of Newberry Regional Mental Health Center. The Newberry Correctional Facility consists of seven interconnected, 80-bed units, two-bed housing units, one 88-bed unit, 134-bed unit, a 32-bed housing unit and an adjoining educational building. The facility also contains a separate warehouse, maintenance buildings, and an administration building. All housing units are double bunked, except for four cells that are used for temporary holding.

There is also one double bunked general population unit that houses 192 prisoner whose protections needs cannot be met in a traditional general population setting and do not require placement in administrative segregation based on their conduct.

The Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility is adjacent to the Port City Industrial Park near Muskegon and sits on 76 acres. Brooks and the West Shoreline Correctional Facility (formerly named the Muskegon Temporary Facility) were the first two prisons to begin a program of shared services. Positions that are shared with the West Shoreline Facility are warden and warden's staff, business manager, personnel officer, training staff, school principal, mail room staff, physical plant superintendent and warehouse manager.

Tucked away in a heavily wooded section in the southeast corner of the city of Muskegon, the Muskegon Correctional Facility began operations with two dormitory-style housing units. To increase capacity, housing units have been added since it opened. In 1983, Muskegon became the first Michigan prison to become accredited by the American Correctional Association's Commission on Accreditation. In 1986 it was the first to become re-accredited.

The West Shoreline Correctional Facility is one of three in a complex of facilities for male offenders. As part of a complex, it shares some operations with the other facilities. There are eight separate housing units contained in four buildings. Each unit has 120 beds. The remaining buildings are used for administration, health services, school, library, maintenance, storage and mail office. The West Shoreline Correctional Facility and the Brooks Correctional Facility were the first two prisons to share services. Positions shared with Brooks are warden and warden's staff, business manager, personnel officer, training staff, school principal, mail room staff, physical plant superintendent and warehouse manager. During 1991, the prison was converted from a Level II facility to a Secure Level I facility.

Under the administrative control of the Cooper Street Correctional Facility , the Special Alternative Incarceration program (SAI) began in 1988 as an alternative to prison for male probationers convicted of certain crimes and selected by courts. In 1992 the program was expanded to include both male and female prisoners and probationers. State law precludes participation if convicted of a number of primarily assaultive crimes.

Detroit Detention Center (DDC) is located at 17601 Mound Road Detroit, Michigan. The DDC makes use of the former Mound Correctional Facility which was closed in January 2012. The DDC was opened on August 1, 2013 and operates under an interagency agreement between the Detroit Police Department and the Michigan Department of Corrections. The DDC holds all pre-arraigned detainees 17 years of age or older in the City of Detroit for up to 72 hours. The detainees at the DDC are booked, and fingerprinted by MDOC employees and are arraigned by either the 36th District Court or the 34th District Court.
