Alma , Michigan, named for the daughter of itís developer, is located along the Pine River in Gratiot County, in the center of the Lower Peninsula. In 1785, this area was made part of Wayne County, as indicated in the Northwest Land Ordinance. Gratiot County was formed in 1855, and named for General Charles Gratiot. In the 1880s, the courthouse was built on Center Street. Machine shops, production of pontoon boats, and oil refining provide many of the jobs here in Alma.
