Biological emergencies can be due to large outbreaks of common diseases, such as pandemic
flu, or new emerging diseases, such as the West Nile virus. Biological emergencies can
also involve a controlled or deliberate release of germs or other biological substances that can make you sick.
Many biological substances must be inhaled, enter through a cut in the skin or be eaten to make you sick. Some biological
agents do not cause contagious diseases.
