Catching Wild Pigs

A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurts.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn.

When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in The last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd!

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon the pigs go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America .

The government keeps pushing us toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at a time.

One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

Also, you will see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America , you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!

Keep your eyes on the newly elected politicians who are about to slam the gate on America .

Get Rid of a Mouse in the House

From November to February, many Michiganders have problems with mice. Mice can carry a wide variety of diseases transmissible to humans. A mouse can contaminate your food supply with it's feces and urine. Getting rid of mice is really not that difficult.

Trapping mice has several advantages: Trapping is safer than potentially hazardous poison baits. Trapping gives you quick, immediate results. And finally, if you trap the mice - it allows for easy disposal of the dead rodents (versus possible odor problems that will occur if rodenticides kill mice in inaccessible areas of your home)

Tips on Trapping Mice

Place mice traps up against walls, behind objects, and in secluded areas where mouse droppings, gnawing and damage are evident.

Snap-type traps should be oriented perpendicular to the wall, with the trigger end against the vertical surface.

Multiple-catch traps should be placed with the entrance hole parallel to the wall.

Traps and glue boards should be checked daily and dead mice disposed of in plastic bags.

Gloves should be worn when handling mouse carcasses to prevent any chance of disease.

Place mouse traps about 6 to 10 feet apart, since mice tend to travel very short distances

Disposal of Dead Rodents
Always wear rubber or plastic gloves when removing dead rats and mice and when cleaning or disinfecting items contaminated by the mice feces. Put the dead rat in a plastic bag that can be close. Then, place that bag in a second bag and seal it tightly again.

Dispose of the mice in trash containers with tight fitting lids - so other animals do not smell the dead rat and try to get at it. Rat and Mouse traps can be disinfected by soaking them in a solution of three tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water or a commercial disinfectant containing phenol. After handling rodents of any kind or cleaning objects that may have come in contact with the rodent, thoroughly wash gloved hands in a general household disinfectant or in soap and warm water.

Then remove gloves and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water.

F.A.A.N & The Gingerbread Man

Wednesday, September 16- Gingerbread Man Cookie Day at Pre-School With Dairy Allergic Child

In one hour, I will go and pick up my care free, beautiful, and very intelligent 4 1/2 year old daughter from her pre-school class at St. John's School in Rochester, Michigan. In one hour, and hopefully not before one hour, I will know if her day was a success by just looking at her. If I get a phone call from her school in this hour, the day was not good. That means a food allergy attack and possibly a visit to the hospital next door.

If , when I pick her up,she is a little sweaty, slightly tired, but happy when she hugs me, I will know that it was a good "food allergy" day and nothing but a few harmless hives may have shown up on her face or hands while in the presence of dairy products. See, my daughter has anaphylaxis dairy allergies, which means that if she comes in contact with dairy products, she gets a hive. If she ingests any dairy products, her throat will close, she will blow up like a balloon and she could die. This is the truth of living life on life's terms with a child that has life threatening food allergies.

But, thanks the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, (FAAN) a 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization and its guidance, the chances of my daughter dying from an allegy attack are very, very slim if I continue to do my part--the footwork, the food watches, the cookie dough making, ect.... Event he slight threat of an anaphylactic attack keeps me alert, aware and energetic enough to continue to tread the way through dangerous waters. Even if those waters seem as simple as 'The Gingerbread Man" cookie baking day at pre-school.

When the "Gingerbread Man" cookie day was announced, my daughters teachers took me aside first and told me. This is what I expect to happen because her teachers are extremely kind people who go out of their way to keep me and Madison in "the Loop" of pre-school activities that will involve dairy products.

In fact, I held Madison back and kept her in the same pre -school class, with the same teacher, primarily because her food allergies are so severe. In addition to not wanting to push her into kindergarden, I needed the extra year to get into the groove of remembering what it was like to have an allergy kid entering the real world.

Today, I remembered exactly what it was like:

It started last week with the personal reminder from the teacher about Gingergread man cookie day. She asked me if I could bring in Madison's own dairy free cookie dough to make Gingy's with the other kids. I made a mental note to make sure I had our own cookie dough and cookie cutter to bring in. Then today I realized that mental notes in my head do not necessarily stay put. I had the cookie dough, but could not find The Gingerbread Man cutter for the life of me....or her! The dairy allergy that we live with is so severe, that my daughter will get hives on her face and arms if the same equipment (aka: cookie cutters, knifes) is used. This is what we refer to as "cross contamination."

I don't mean to threaten, alarm, scare or confuse anyone with this information, it is just simply the truth. And the truth is that we have to be as careful as we can. This morning we made her own cookie dough, got it packed in her dairy free bag, and went off to school. I can't say I wasn't nervous, because I was. But, I have to let go. I cannot stay with her every second of every day- not possible. So I have to trust.

I trust her teachers- Ms. Petros and Ms. Weber. In fact, I met Ms. Weber in the foyer this afternoon and we discussed our strategy as we walked with Madison to the classroom. Madison is and has been well aware and educated about her food allergies. She does not eat or touch anything, does not complain, and even asks me at times "Mom, are you SURE there is no dairy in this!"

When we got down to her her classroom, I gave them Madison's cookie dough, put everything else in it's place, checked the Benedryl and Epi-Pen stash, and gave my daughter a kiss goodbye. As I drove home, I send messages of gratitude to the universe that Crittenton Hospital is right next door to her school.

I trust Crittenton hospital, and Beaumont hospitals, and the hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky where she ended up after an anaphylactic attack. In fact, the food allergy is believed to be the leading cause of anaphylaxis outside the hospital setting, causing an estimated 50,000 to 125,000 emergency department visits each year in the U.S., depending on the source. I also implicitly trust and admire Dr. Savliwala, our allergist. He is in mine and many others opinions the best pediatric and adult allergist in the world. THE WORLD!!!! (strong statements, but he is awesome.)

But most of all, I am deeply grateful for and fully trust the Food and Allergy Anaphylaxis Network , a 501-(c) (3) not for profit organization that was established in 1991. FAAN’s membership now stands at close to 30,000 worldwide and includes families, dietitians, nurses, physicians, school staff, and representatives from government agencies and the food and pharmaceutical industries. FAAN serves as the communication link between the patient and others

I found FAAN through a group called the Circle of Food Allergic Families (COFAF) here in Birmingham, Michigan. These two organizations have been invaluable to me with their continuous source of up to date facts, statistics and allergy alerts. FAAN and COFAF have given our family the ability and resources to help advocate, educate and explain what a "life-threatening dairy allergy" means. They have also give me the information and tools I need so that I do not have to go into a "defensive mode" when discussing life threatening food allergies.

Since joining the FAAN organization in 2005, I have gained an incredible amount of knowledge and self esteem when it comes to advocating for my daughter and others with food allergies. I don't preach, hold seminars, take hostages or judge people who do not understand food allergies. I just simply stand up and say "My daughter has life threatening food allergies and all I ask is if anyone needs to bring a treat to school, please check let me know and I will take care of my daughters food."

Since 2005, FAAN organization has grown nationally and is working harder than ever to help raise more awareness about children and adults with food allergies. On Saturday, October 3, FAAN will be hosting a Food Allergy Walk at Kensington Metropark, 2240 W. Buno Road, Milford, MI 48380. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. There will also be another Food Allergy Walk in Millennium Park, 1415 Maynard Ave.,SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534 this Saturday, Sept. 19.

On October 3 at Kensington Metropark, myself and thousands of others will walk in honor of our children and families who are living with food allergies, life threatening or not. We will walk to support FAAN and its organization and hopefully raise enough money to continue to educate America about a growing problem facing many people today.

I walk in honor of Madison, our daughter, and for all the little ones who can't explain that they are having an allergy attack and they need immediate help. I learned to be aware of the signs and have been trained in how to help someone survive. Without FAAN, none of this would be possible.

Dr. Dan is the Man- Bloomfield Chiropractor is the Best in Business

"I will NEVER go to a chiropractor! Quacks... Voodoo artists...not real doctors.....they just want your money.....won't fix any problems....... Never....... that's it....end of discussion....."

Does this sound familiar? If so, then you can relate. If not, bless you.. you are probably not in pain or already have had a good experience with a chiropractor.

My situation started about, oh, let's say...... 25 years ago. I was 15. Yes, 15. I was with my family at Mackinac Island, on vacation. We rented those fabulous bicycle built for twos. First mistake. I'm sure they can be fun if you have 2 people who want to pedal, but I was riding with my brother Robbie, who wouldn't pedal his own bike, let alone a bike built for two.

We all biked to the Arch Rock side. My mom, 2 brothers and sister all wanted to climb up a path that seemed as steep as Mount Everest to see this picturesque "Arch Rock". I decided to go with them. Mistake #2. Dad was smart. He hung out on a bench by the water and waited.

Long story short, I was walking a dirt path, with my brother Jimmy. We were about 1/2 way up to the infamous "Arch Rock". As we walked the outer ridge of the trail, my foot got stuck in a tree root that was perfectly arched like a loop to catch someones toe. That someone was me. I got my toe stuck, stumbled, and fell- sideways. All the way, down the hill.

As I fell, all I knew was that I was in big trouble and tried to break my fall. I tried to to grab onto anything in my path to help slow me down. I remember finally grasping onto a tree branch, but then it snapped like a twig. I fell backwards, sideways, and then finally managed to roll and grab onto a post of the "stairs" that led to the Arch Rock.

As I fell, I heard voices screaming "Oh my gosh--- are you o.k.???? Oh No- look out!" Of course I was speechless, because I couldn't believe what was happening and was to afraid to scream. I just wanted to stop tumbling down that hill.

When I was able to fully grasp the stairwell post, I stopped the momentum of my fall. I hung on, and pulled myself under the banister, onto the staircase. I was 1/4 of the way down. I felt o.k.- a little dizzy and bruised, but after all, I was 15. At 15, kids are invincible. I did hurt, but I was able to limp down the rest of the stairs.

When I made it to the bottom, my dad was still sitting there, waiting for us. I limped over to him, bloody, bruised, leaves, twigs, and mulch sticking out of my head. He looked at me and said 'Where is your mother and brother?"-- Dads.....

I said "Um, Dad.....I kinda fell down that hill." He said "Your mother and brother have been looking for you. Now I can't find them. I will just wait here." Let's just say that my dad is older and a bit oblivious to emergency situations. So, I limped down to Lake Superior, washed off the blood, mulch, twigs, leaves and dirt, and limped back to the bench.

As I sat, two guys come running down the stairs, yelling "Oh My God, a kid just fell down the hill!!!!".................that's when my dad looked at me and figured it out. But, still, not a whole lot of response. My dad is pretty calm.

The guys saw me sitting there and said "It's You!" are you o.k.?????- Finally, someone acknowledged my pain. I was vindicated. I said, "yeah, I'm o.k." and that was that. Until my mom and brother came down the stairs. Then it was interesting.

Mom and brother said "Wow, we heard about a kid who fell down the hill". My dad looked at me, I looked at him, and then looked at them, and said "yeah, that was me." apparently I did a bang up job cleaning myself up because no one seemed to be that concerned about my injuries.

Eventually, all family members got back together and biked it back to the main dock. At least this time my brother Robbie did a little more pedaling. I remember being very sore and very bruised. I did get a little attention from my mom, but it really didn't seem like that big of a deal. In fact, it turned into a 'funny' story. One of those- hey remember when Carol fell down the side of the Arch Rock mountain.. ha, ha, ha......

Now, 25 years later, I feel the injury and am not laughing anymore. Add a car accident, 15 years of working in restaurants, and having a baby-- instant recipe for constant back, neck, shoulder pain.

After my daughter was born, I developed this knot in my rhomboid/trapezoid area on my right shoulder. Actually, it started during pregnancy. I could not rotate my head more than 5 degrees. I know this now, because I finally understand measurement of rotation.

I lived with pain constantly. I ended up in physical therapy 2 years ago. I did regular massage and heat and ice. I would go to my massage therapist and say "my rhomoboids are trashed." she did the best she could. I love massage and would get one every week if I could afford it, but I knew I needed more help. Finally, 2 months ago, I did something I said I would "NEVER" do. I went to a chiropractor.

Dr. Daniel McAleer and his staff at Kingswood Chiropractic Center in Bloomfield were recommended to me by a friend that I know, and obviously trust. This friend saw me one Monday night, when I was unable to turn my head. She said "Um, have you tried a chiropractor". I went into my spiel........blah, blah, blah, no way, never...... Then she said the magic words. "How long do you want to be in pain?" ah, pain... the great motivator.

So, 2 months ago, I went to Dr. Dan. I walked in, told him and his whole office that I do not believe in chiropractors, but that I was in so much pain I would try anything. Dr. Dan and his staff were very pleasant, and they understood my predicament. They must have heard this 10 million times.

After my initial consultation, I went 3 times the first week, 3 times the second, and 2 the third. At my first appointment, he measured the rotation of my head. I could only turn to the right about 35 degrees (hey- I could at least turn my whole body to see behind me when pulling out of my driveway)

The left side I could turn a whole 40 degrees! Whew..... I think Dr. Dan thought I was Superwoman. or crazy.....probably crazy to be in this much pain and still think I could control it.

So, now I'm feeling much, much, much better than I ever have in the past. No drugs (amazing), no PT every other day. I signed up for a year program that saves money in the long run. It is not extravagant- it is necessary. I have more energy and amazingly, my headaches seemed to have disappeared.

Dr. Dan did tell me that in addition to pain relief, I would probably feel better all over. Of course I didn't believe him then. I just nodded and smiled and did the perfunctory pageantry. But, for me, not just seeing, but feeling is believing. I'm sure there are others out there who are or were in a similar situation as myself. I also know that not every chiropractic office is the same.

However, Dr. Dan and his staff at the Kingswood Chiropractic Center have made a believer out of me. Easy appointments, very, very child friendly. (My daughter has to give Dr. Dan a hug every time we leave). If I would have know then, what I know now.... I learned again to NEVER say NEVER. If you think you need to see a chiropractor, then you probably do.

The Best Nike Basketball Shoe

Year after year Nike comes out with top of the line, name brand, basketball shoes with high quality. But every year there are a couple duds, here is a list of the most popular shoes from Nike and how they stack up against each other.

HYPERDUNKS- Hyperdunks are light weight, and grip the floor well. Hyperdunks also have small extentions on the side of the shoe to help you balance. There is one problem though, they fall apart faster then any shoe you will ever have. The outside leather tears very easily and even the bottom part of the shoe will completely come off. This is the best shoe you can have for four months then it becomes junk. The price is $92.00 currently

LEBRON SOLDIER III- Lebron Soldier III's are very heavy. Supposively they make you jump higher, but if it does it's very little. These shoes don't tear easy though and will last you awhile. The grip is nice because of the weight but its harder to move in these shoes. The price is currently $75.oo

P2 V- These shoes are not very popular but are the best shoe Nike has to offer for a low price. The dont last very long but it is a high cut shoe so it offers ankle support and the grip is decent. The price is currently $29.00

Basketball Apparel

When it comes to basketball the wrong gear can really mess you up. If your shoes were to keep sliding or your shirt feels like it's pulling your arms back it will make you perform worse. This is a short article on the most effective basketball sports apparel.

When it comes to shoes, you don't want to buy from a small company. You don't know if they are good quality or not. I reccomend Nike, Adidas, and Jordan. Shoes such as the Hyperdunk that are light weight and have good grip to the floor is what is needed. Dont be fooled when company say this shoe is proven to make you jump higher, if it does at all its only slightly, and the shoe is likely heavy so you become less agile.

When it comes to clothing, you want shorts that arent heavy because that will just slow you down. Long shorts may look cool but they heavier they are the harder it is to move. For shirts though, if you want to wear a t-shirt, the bigger it is, the easier it is to move your arms. But when you sweat the sleeves still stick, which is why I recommend wearing Under Armour. It absorbs sweat so your shirt wont stick to you.

Well, That Sucks!-- One woman's view of using humor to help cope...

As I walked out to my car the other day, I spotted this pacifier lying on ground of my local community center parking lot. My immediate thought was "Uh Oh..... someone is going to have a bad day."

I thought this because anybody who has ever had a child, adopted a child, fostered a child, cared for a child, been in charge of a child or who has remotely even been around a child who loses a beloved pacifier will understand what I was thinking. Yes, some poor parent was going to be in for a very bad day when they realized their child's pacifier was gone. Vamoose......History. And, when the parent did realize this, it will probably be too late. The child is already whimpering, whining, crying, or heaven forbid-- screaming..............for the pacifier.

I'm thinking that this has happened to the best of us. Even for someone like me, who had the perfect child who did not require a pacifier. My child only required a blankie buddy, an Eeyore, a Zebra, a giraffe, dairy free products and dairy free snacks--- but not a pacifier. I am not better than. I could be worse. But, to me it doesn't matter if it is a pacifier or a green wire twist tie that was grabbed from the produce section of the grocery store- a soother is a soother. Whatever works, works.

So, I went to my car- grabbed my camera, and snapped a shot of what could become someone's nightmare. And I didn't flinch. In fact, I started to laugh. I know this may sound cruel, but

sorry.....I thought I was having a bad day before I saw this. However, the lone pacifier became my catalyst for changing my perspective on what constitutes a bad day.

If I thought my day was going poorly, I had to think again. I thought about the parent or person who was with the child who had lost the pacifier. And, just wait until that parent realizes that pacifier has vanished.........Gone.....vamoose..........bye-bye..........Then I imagined that the child is screaming for the "paci"...... Now, I flinch. Because I've heard that scream, and now I am hearing the noise. I started to feel frightened. I wanted to flee, because that sound just might reach my ears, in that parking lot.

See, this was no ordinary parking lot where the pacifier was lying. This pacifier was lying in the parking lot of the local community center that hosts a plethora of activities for children of all ages. Problem is, parents of multiples, and I am talking about multiple children of multiple ages, have to get their child into the age appropriate activity at a specific time.

I am fortunate. I only have one child. She has to be in one class at one time. And somedays I have a hard time doing that. But to see these parents lug three, four kids into the center, only to drop one off and lug the other three, four kids back to the car, just to turn around and do it all again in 20 minutes because the class only lasts for 40 minutes and you cannot leave the property----- well, it kind of made me tired and a bit more compassionate. And very, very, grateful now for just having one.

It wasn't always like that. We tried to have more kids. We wanted more kids. We went through extraordinary measures to have more kids. It just wasn't in the big plan. So, instead of me feeling down about having only one child, I have tried to make the best of it. And using humor helps me cope with the other side of any given situation.

This is why, after spotting the pacifier lying innocently on the ground, I went to my car and grabbed my camera. I cracked myself up as I took several photos, at several angles, knowing that I could write about what it feels like to have loved, lost and moved on. I cannot say it is still not painful when I see a mom with 2 or more children, it is just more of a process to help change my thinking pattern.

We have enough turmoil in today's world to keep me occupied if I so choose. Instead, I choose to photograph lost pacifiers and take pleasure in creating an idea. This is not easy, it takes practice and patience, but I'm glad I have the fortitude to do so.

So, as I was cracking myself up by taking photos of a pacifier in a parking lot, a woman cautiously approached me. She thought I was taking photos of her car, which was parked in the spot right where the pacifier was laying. She thought that someone hit her car, took off, and that I was taking photos of her car for evidence.

Imagine her surprise when I laughed and said "Oh, no!..... I'm just taking a photo of this pacifier laying in the ground. I'm into creative writing and wanted to write a piece about how a lost pacifier could create a very bad day for someone."

At first, the woman looked at me like I had lost my mind. I was not offeded. This happens frequently. I am used to it. But then, guess what...... She started to laugh too...............
