The word itself conjures up negative connotations in my mind. I think that our children's lives have got too much of it. Structured classrooms and structure soccer practices and tight schedules and no time for childhood imagination and play. Playhouses can bring back a bit of the childhood memories that we had as children. The lives of children today are much more structured and supervised, with few opportunities for free play. A number of factors have led to this. Parents are afraid for their children's safety and many children are no longer free to roam their neighborhoods or even their own yards unless accompanied by adults. It seems to go without saying you must supervise your children at all times, but imagination should not be stifled. If you are considering purchasing a playhouse, make sure that the playhouse is constructed well and is located within view from inside your house. Keep a door or window of your home open while children are in the playhouse. That way, you'll be able to hear any calls or sudden, unnatural sounds. All playhouse furnishings should be suited for the age of the children that use the playhouse. Make sure furniture has no small, sharp or detachable parts, and don't hesitate to update furniture as children get older. Some working families can't supervise their children after school, giving rise to latchkey children who stay indoors or attend supervised after-school activities. In these cases, make sure that plenty of free play is provided on the weekends. Children's lives have become structured and scheduled by adults, who hold the mistaken belief that "this sport or that lesson" will make their children more successful as adults. This may be true - but there is nothing like learning through unstructured play. Labels: Playhouses |
