A Big Leap in the Right Direction for Online Marketers - Just in time for the HolidaysWhenever something big happens online, it most likely has to do with Google and this article covers news that is no different. Google has changed the clickable area of thier Adsense ads both on the Google search engine, all of thier properties (like Google Base and Froogle) and all of thier publisher's websites. As both a publisher (that is now earning less money with the same amount of traffic) and an advertiser (that is now converting better), I applaud this step that Google has taken. It will pay off in great dividends for them. Accidental clicks will be lessened and it will increase advertisers trust 100 fold. Google and Trust must walk hand-in-hand. Accidental clicks from DIV layer overlaps will all but be diminished to nothing. As a publisher, it has been my experience that the online pendulum of online advertising has swung too far back into the direction it was when the dot-com bust happened. Another words, ad spending is not monitored enough, companies are spending more in advertising than they should - and more importantly more than what it is bringing them in business. This of course, is a hotly debated topic - but I will stand strong on my opinion. Kudos to Google for taking a big leap in making sure that accidental clicks are lessened for advertisers. This change will also open the door to the pay per lead/sale program that Google is launching. Google sent a letter to AdSense publishers, explaining why they’ve made the change: "We’re rolling out a change to our text ad formats to help reduce accidental clicks and increase value for advertisers. Previously, users could click on the background and full text of an ad, but now users can click only on the title and URL of a text ad. This new format will match the changes we’ve implemented on Google.com to help decrease the number of accidental clicks and increase the number of ad conversions. A reduction in accidental clicks will keep users on your pages, interacting with your content until they choose to click on an ad. This change will enhance the users’ overall experience with your websites and improve advertiser campaign value, but it’s likely that your click-through rate will decrease." Google's Adsense change is the first step in making that pendulum start moving back in the other direction. I can't wait until it stabilizes in the middle (or can I?) ... and How many calories in a cucumber?I am freaking out because my clothes are starting to get tight and fortunately or unfortunately, I am similiar to the majority of 40ish females in the United States, in that my weight is related to my overall mood. When I look good, I feel good and my attitude shows. My weight (in my own mind) is the biggest factor in whether I "look good". Normally, my weight fluctuates very little. At least for the first 25 years of my adult life. Something drastic changed a couple of years ago .. and I started putting on weight. Last summer, I used the diet "Self-Control and Exercise" to pull off about 25 lbs. (yes .. 25 lbs.). Then, in my quest for self-improvement, I quit smoking this past summer. And the weight in starting to creep up (rather quickly, actually). Quick diversion: I wrote this weight loss calculator about five years ago. Boy, is it accurate. Without getting into any details, it actually uses mathematical equations to determine how fast your metabolism is and how fast you can lose (or gain weight) depending on how many calories you intake. It creates a chart that you can print and hangup on your refridgerator for motivation. Skipping back to the start of this blog entry, I have been freaking out and doing multiple searches on Google per day for things like "How many calories in a cucumber", "Which foods have negative calories" and more. Consumer Reports Magazine - Wake up!I recently read an article in the December 2007 Consumer Reports magazine (which is delivered to my house) called "For the savvy shopper". The #2 suggestion in this Consumer Reports article indicated that to "Save big shopping for Christmas Gifts this Season" - go online. I agree 110% with this statement, what floored me is the information following this statement. In summary, they stated that the best deals can be found on sites like shopping.com and shopzilla (as well as a few others). Hello? these websites charge huge "per click" costs to the retailers and who do you think absorbs these costs? You (the consumer) absorb the costs by paying more for the product. Actually, I would stay away from websites that advertise on these portals, because they can ONLY be passing the cost onto you- the consumer. Advertising online has become a huge cost for retailers - when just a few years ago, natural SERP results were free and PPC budgets were NIL. A better idea: use FROOGLE http://www.froogle.com/ (now it is called Google Product Search .. but to me - it's still FRUGAL ) to compare product pricing. eBay is also a good place, if you can trust the seller. Google Product Search does not charge retailers to upload products and more importantly does not charge on a pay-per-click basis. This is a huge cost that is eliminated for retailers that use this resource. Last year, shopping.com charged a MINIMUM of $0.35 per click. Just three clicks and the retailer has to charge SOMEONE $1.00 extra for the product. In some cases, the website publisher is paid on a "Per Sale" basis. This is much more economical because the retailer only pays for success. Sometimes these are called affiliate programs. They do not have to pass the cost of thousands of bad clicks to the consumer. No this is not a riddle, it is a lead in to a very interesting trend that is happening on the search engines (in particular Google) that you probably do not know about.Before I get into the privacy, I will explain the connection between personalization and search engines. The basic principle behind personalization from search engines is simple. When you search on Google and type in a search query, Google stores the search query (and other data). As you return to the search engine, a profile of your search habits is developed over time. With this database of information on you and your tastes, Google can understand your interests and deliver you more relevant search results. How does Google do this? First of all, you have to have a Google product for this to work. Google Gmail, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Calendar and a few others are products that allow Google to track your search (if you are logged in). One solution to the concern of privacy could be a "Search Privacy Bill of Rights", as Danny Sullivan suggests. After a 16 year Chrysler career, I left Daimler Chrysler in 2000, not because I didn't like it. I loved the automobile company, loved the people and loved my job. I had four small children at home and could no longer keep everything together. When there is news about Chrysler, I read it with a magnifying glass. Chrysler is like an old, kind uncle to me. 12,000 jobs are a lot of jobs. The new "privately held" Chrysler, LLC will be a smaller, leaner and more selective automaker than it was i n the past.
