My children travel alot with their sport activities and my husband and I always take turns traveling. Due to the amount of activities and the number of children, rarely will you see both of us at one particular event.

A couple of years ago, my daughter had a tournament in the middle of Wisconsin and due to work obligations, we couldn't get on the road until after 9pm. This meant that she was going to sleep in the backseat during the 8 hour drive and I was going to drive.

Not a problem. I had my mapquest printout and optimistically hopped in the car with a pack of diet coke and a few packs of gum.

All went well until we got to Chicago at about 3am. I-94 was shut down for construction and I started to panic. In the past, I have gotten lost or had to change courses, but this time it was 3 in the morning, pitch black and I was in a city that I was not familiar with. I couldn't call my trusty husband - because chances are - he was sound asleep and wouldn't hear the phone.

I used the compass on my minivan's ceiling to find a different path to Wisconsin - but it was a scary enough incident that I remember it clearly - to this day. Of course, I relayed the incident to my husband the next morning and he must have heard the terror in my voice.
