Dieting with Low Glycemic Index Foods- CLICK HERE!

A Followup post to How quickly can I lose 10 lbs?

During my research, I learned a significant amount about the Glycemic Index. If you are diabetic, you probably have already heard about this index.

Eating a lot of high Glycemic Index foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. This is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary - you don't exercise alot or you spend significant time in front of the television or computer. Switching to eating mainly low GI carborhydrates that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals.

I was not sure what the techinical terms were, but for the last couple of years, I noticed that when I ate Oatmeal or a nutritious cereal for breakfast, I did much better than when I ate a bagel. I think the Glycemic Index is the reason behind this. The South Beach Diet uses the Glycemic Index, as well as the Nutrisystem Diet.

Low Glycemic Index diets help people lose and control weight
Low Glycemic Index diets increase the body's sensitivity to insulin
Low Glycemic Index carbs improve diabetes control
Low Glycemic Index carbs reduce the risk of heart disease
Low Glycemic Index carbs reduce blood cholesterol levels
Low Glycemic Index carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS
Low Glycemic Index carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer
Low Glycemic Index carbs prolong physical endurance
High Glycemic Index carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise

How to Switch to a Low GI Diet

The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach - ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
Use Basmati or Doongara rice Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

McCanns Traditional Irish Oatmeal

McCanns traditional form (pinhead) Irish oatmeal.
McCanns traditional form (pinhead) Irish oatmeal is made from wholegrain Irish groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) and are considered by many to be the finest oats in the world. The temperate, humid climate of Ireland promotes the slow ripening of the grain enabling the oats to draw the goodness from the soil, yielding a crop of fuller, plumper grains. McCanns uses 100% whole grains, leaving all the natural goodness of the bran, endosperm and germ intact, just as nature intended. The oat groat is cut a couple of times giving this oatmeal it's delicious, nutty flavor. This oatmeal contains no saturated fat, sodium or cholesterol and is full of energizing B vitamins. It is high in fiber, containing both soluble and insoluble which are both essential to good nutrition. Soluble fiber from oatmeal, as part of a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
